Fray Alonso de Benavides, the Superior of the Franciscans in the Viceroyalty of New Spain, was about to surrender in fear because of the casualties.
Almost every missionary he sent was killed in the current states of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.
He travelled to Spain to ask his superior for advice, and they told him he should meet with a nun that was being investigated by the Inquisition.
Sor María de Jesús de Ágreda, in Soria, was a cloistered nun that confessed that she had ecstasies while praying in the Choir and bilocated to an Indian village near a large river, catechizing the Jumbo, Texan and Caddo natives.
Fray Alonso went to visit her, and she solved his fear by giving him the stone carving that had converted many muslims in the Spanish Reconquest, called La Conquistadora, “The Conqueror of hearts”.
He entrusted to our Lady all his evangelizing and missionary work in the current US, and pilgrimaged with the statue from Mexico to New Mexico, building Santa Fe’s Cathedral and enthroning our blessed Mother.
The natives saw the procession coming and were friendly, asked for Baptism, knew many Catholic prayers.
The explanations the nun gave him about the landscape, the trees, the customs and clothing of those natives turned amazingly accurate despite she had never been there.
A politically correct or “history ignorant” gentleman had to become bishop in 1992 to change the name to “Our Lady of Peace”, because he thought La Conquistadora could be offensive.
Artificial tensions have been made up between the Spanish settlers and the Native Americans, but we will continue to call Her “La Conquistadora”, and we will try to continue the evangelizing and missionary labor with the fruit of our work.
Our purpose in this planet is temporary, we have been created for Heaven. Therefore, our Mission is a spiritual one, that must follow the Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ, and the humble and obedient example of our Most blessed Mother, in Charity to our brothers. Please join us!
